Teaching & Learning
Many pupils require additional support to develop their speaking and listening skills. Total Communication is a teaching approach that employs various methods of communication such as signed, oral, auditory, written and visual aids. Our teams work to adapt this teaching method to the specific needs and abilities of every pupil.

We believe that communication is a basic human right. It is our aim that every pupil will be helped to develop his or her communicative potential within a learning environment that puts communication at the heart of the curriculum.

Our classrooms use visual scheduling to help the development of the pupils’ communication and learning skills.

We use PECS (Picture Exchange Communication Programme) and Makaton signing where this is beneficial for pupils with communication impairments as well as other forms of Augmentative Communication including switches and objects of reference.

Our pupils are given support to develop and use the forms of communication that are most appropriate to their needs, interests, relationships and levels of development.

Using a total communication approach, the schools environment will allow the pupils to express themselves in a range of ways.

  • Communication is at the heart of our curriculum.
  • Communication is at the core of learning, because all information has to be transmitted in ways that pupils can understand.
  • Pupils learn to think through language, and language emerges through the process of communication.
  • As relationships are formed and sustained via communication, it is integrated into all areas of the curriculum.
  • Communication does not stop at the classroom door.

Using a total communication approach, the schools environment will allow the pupils to express themselves in a range of ways.
